Citizens (free) may have 2 colonies in Coalition space where both their planets and ships are protected from attack. This is the recommended level for new players to learn how to manage a colony’s economy, to learn combat by dueling with other ships and to gain an understanding of the overall game.
Settler (15 credits) may have 4 colonies in Frontier space where the Coalition can somewhat protect their planets but ship to ship combat is free for all. This is the recommended level of play for casual or independent players. Players here cannot lose their colonies but they may be plundered by pirates if not adequately defended.
Rebel (30 credits) may have 6 colonies in Free Space which is a lawless area outside the Coalition’s reach. This is the recommended level of play for hard core players where forming alliances with other players is almost a necessity.
Players can upgrade to the next level at any time during the campaign but will have to reestablish their colonies.

Players are encouraged to invite their friends and leave ships in space.
Players are encouraged to use the suggestion dialog to send comments and suggestions.
